In October 2010 Tatiana Baklanova, general manager of the first Russian “green” event agency BtG Event Solutions, and Natalia Galechyan, PR director of St.- Petersburg's Ecological Union, presented innovative tendencies in event and hotel industries designed to “green” (ecologically-friendly and resource saving) technologies exploitation in terms of the Third International Conference-Exhibition M.I.C.E. in Ekaterinburg.
The speakers took the floor with the report ”Green” events and ECOhotels modern trend and new opportunities”. Eco-specialists were executed a preliminary “green” audit of the separate Ekaterinburg's industry which results were also discussed during the conference.
More than 50 participants representatives of local authorities and press, air companies, hoteliers, tourist and event agencies, students and university teachers attended the seminar. Members of the MICE market in Ekaterinburg were acquainted with the potential of “green” technologies implementation in hotel and events industries, examples of realized green conceptions both abroad and within Russia were demonstrated as well as advantages of ecological business management were highlighted.
The audience had a chance to learn: theoretical aspects of sustainability conception, peculiarities of “green” events arrangement, what is an eco-hotel, what should be done to make a hotel “green”, eco-marking and advantages of eco certification, what are eco-standards for hotels in different countries, why ecological technologies implementation is economically profitable and etc.
In 2006 the new airport Koltsovo, one of the best airports in Russia, which supports direct connections with 29 cities of the world was opened in Ekaterinburg. During the last few years the hotel business in Ekaterinburg was significantly expanded by new and very dignified hotels with conference facilities compared to internationally acknowledged hotel chains such as: Novotel (160 rooms), Angelo Airport Hotel (211 rooms), Onegin Palace (200 rooms), Ramada Yekaterinburg (160 rooms), Hyatt Regency Ekaterinburg (296 rooms). A lot of “newly born” hotel buildings were constructed in accordance with world standards in the sphere of “green” construction, “green” policy is introduced in hotel management. Professional level of hotel staff left only positive impressions and proved that Ekaterinburg is ready to host national and international highest level events.
Ekaterinburg located on the edge of the European-Asian border becomes a significant player of Russian and international MICE industry among other cities of Russia. It is also essential to mark a substantial contribution of Ekaterina Demchenko, deputy director of NPO “Congress Bureau of Ekaterinburg”, in the development of MICE industry, “green” tendencies and active promotion of the city within Russia and abroad.
Questionnaire survey, preliminary eco-audit and inspection showed that the most city “green” hotels are “Hyatt Regency Ekaterinburg”, “Novotel Ekaterinburg Center”, “Park Inn Ekaterinburg” and “Angelo Airport-Hotel Ekaterinburg”.
